Plant List

 PlantNumberSpacingSpacing in RowsNotes
Arugula 85"3" x 7"
Basil 147"5" x 9"Seed. Rich soil. A sunny spot that is convenient for quick picking. Feeding Not usually required.
Beans (Bush Snap) 249"5" x 1' 1"Plant out in Sept. Average, well drained soil. Mix an organic fertilizer into the soil before planting, using rates given on the label. Supplemental fertilizer seldom required. Fertilize at 1/2 rate used for other vegetables. Seed inoculation not essential for most soils. Flowers self-pollinated. Use shell beans green or dry.
Broccoli 71' 5"1' 5" x 1' 5"Plant out in Aug. Mix composted manure or another high-nitrogen compost into the soil before planting. When heads begin to form, feed with a liquid plant food.Harvest small multiple side shoots that develop after main central head is cut. Broccoli Raab is not related to broccoli.
Cabbage (Fall) 22' 9"2' 7" x 2' 11"
Carrot 1893"3" x 5"Plant out in Oct. Soil quality is more essential that supplemental feeding. Grow carrots on a raised bed for best results. Sow seeds shallow and thin seedlings to recommended spacing.
Collards 811"11" x 1' 3"Plant out in Aug. Fertile, well-drained soil with plenty of well rotted compost dug in. Feeding not usually required, but may be needed if plants grow slowly even though the weather is comfortably warm. Tolerates more heat than most other brassicas. Harvest lower leaves.
Cucumber 61' 11"1' 11" x 1' 11"Plant out in Sept. Well-drained soil enriched with plenty of compost. Drench with a liquid organic fertilizer when plants begin to bloom heavily. Pickling types can also be used fresh. Many new hybrids are gynoecious (female flowering), which means more fruit set. Bees required for pollination
Kale 121' 3"1' 1" x 1' 5"Plant out in Sept. Fertile, well-drained soil with plenty of well rotted compost dug in. Not usually required, but may be needed if plants grow slowly even though the weather is comfortably warm.
Mustard 245"5" x 5"Plant out in Sept. Fertile, well drained soil. None generally needed, because mustard is customarily used as a late summer/fall cover crop to take up nitrogen left in the soil by corn or other vegetables. Consider planting in a wide-row system. Broadleaf types require more space. Cook as greens. Mizuna is a Japanese green used in salads. It is damaged by freezing temperatures.
Oregano 77"5" x 9"
Parsley 115"3" x 9"
Potatoes (Early) 101' 3"1' 1" x 1' 7"Plant out in Jan. Fertile, well drained soil that has not been amended with manure for at least 6 months. Feeding Not usually required if plants are deeply mulched with straw, grass clippings, rotted leaves, or another organic mulch. Plant 2-ounce seed pieces with eyes. Do not use store bought for seed. Remove tops two weeks before digging to toughen skin. Varieties planted by seeds produce less than from seed pieces.
Sage 211"11" x 1' 3"
Tomato (Large) 31' 7"1' 5" x 1' 11"
Tomato (Small) 81' 7"1' 5" x 1' 11"Plant out in Sept. Rich soil with plenty of compost mixed in before planting. Weekly liquid feed or seaweed drench from mid summer onwards. Staking, mulching beneficial. Flowers self-pollinated. Blossom drop due to too high or too low temperatures and/or excessive nitrogen fertilization. Serious problems include blossom-end rot, wilts, whitefly, and leafminers
